The Mycobacterium bovis Spoligotype Database

This website hosts the Mycobacterium bovis Spoligotype Database, currently managed by VISAVET Health Surveillance Centre of Universidad Complutense Madrid. The purposes of this database are:

  1. To provide authoritative names for spoligotypes of all members of the M. tuberculosis complex from animal origin. Each spoligotype pattern will be assigned a unique SB number. The database will also provide binary, hexadecimal and octal code names for spoligotype patterns
  2. To assess the total number of MTBC spoligotypes that have been described.

This database was initially designed and managed by Noel Smith and Rainer Hilscher and was hosted on University of Sussex servers. If you want to learn more about the original project Mbovis.org and how to cite it, please look at the database history section.

The spoligotyping method

Spacer oligonucleotide typing, or spoligotyping, is a rapid, polymerase chain reaction based method for genotyping strains of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC). Spoligotyping patterns can be represented in absolute terms (digitally), and the results can be readily shared among laboratories, thereby enabling the creation of large international databases. Since the spoligotype assay was standardized, tens of thousands of isolates have been analyzed, giving a global picture of MTBC strain diversity. The method is highly reproducible and has been developed into a high-throughput assay for large molecular epidemiology projects.
